The history of Black Fridayis based on many theories, some considered quite controversial. The first recorded use of the term "Black Friday" did not apply to this shopping day but to a financial crisis: specifically, the crash of the United States gold market on September 24, 1869. Two Wall Street stockbrokers, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, worked together to buy as much gold as they could, in order to push the price to the max and sell it at staggering profits. That Friday in September, the conspiracy finally fell apart, sending the stock market into free fall and bankrupting everyone.
The most commonly repeated theory behind the origin of Black Friday, is linked to retailers. As the story goes, after a full year of operating at a loss, stores would supposedly make a profit after Thanksgiving, because shoppers would spend a lot of money on discounted items, with in order to prepare for the holiday gift season. While it's true that retail companies used to record losses in the red and profits in the black when doing their accounting, this version of the origin of Black Fridayis the officially accepted story, albeit inaccurate.
In recent years, another theory has emerged that puts a particularly nasty twist on the holidays, claiming that in the 19th century southern plantation owners could buy slaves at a discount the day after Thanksgiving. This theory has no basis in fact, but it has led some to call for a boycott of retail holidays.
